The World Cup..... Phwaaah!

Ok it’s almost World Cup time. I have noticed the increased advertising, cars with stickers and flags, and nightly news reports on Harry Kewells Balls! (Groin)

But to perfectly honest... do we really care?

I mean unless you were brought up with Soccer like my cousin Marc, does anyone in Australia really care that Germany, Italy, France or Brazil will win the world cup again?

Personally I think that Aussies only like the world cup because it gives us an excuse to pretend we are European during the cup and also (& probably more important) the excuse to get pissed at strange times!

Have a think about that one, not many Aussies can remember the score when Australia played Umbukstani in the preliminary preliminary qualifying final, but you can remember when you got off your face on German beer during the world cup final, you can remember when your mate passed out at the 73rd minute, Jacko peed his pants sleeping on the kitchen floor & the dog ate Brads shoe (sounds like a real story huh).

But really very few of us care about the World Cup!

Some of you might have been sucked in & bought the latest Australia football jumper (I don’t think they call them Guernsey in soccer).... how many times will you wear it? twice, maybe three times.... then it will hang in your cupboard until the next clean out & then end up at the charity shop!

And what about the pretenders? The people that at work say “Gee’s we played well last night” after watching the highlights on Sunrise before coming to work! Or “We were robbed!”..... when we actually can put a team together that is capable of winning, then we have the right to be “Robbed”

The great thing about AFL & ARL is that we actually get a break from it, a season goes for between 26 & 30 weeks, but then you get the build up to the new season! Soccer however is played somewhere in the world 12 months a year!.... no break or build up to the next year!.... BORING!

Marc my cousin & Rob from Sydney will probably argue with me.... but boys... Deal with it, Soccer is not a real sport!

I’m the Chairman & this is my Blog!

`Hey guys. Or should I say chairpeople.
Well Ive actually become a liitle interested in the world cup . Im in the tipping comp at work with all the poms and round ball lovers.
$200 for the winner. Little do they know I have the walking encyclopedia as my adviser.
I definitely wont be the one watching midnight and 4.30 am games. Thats what time there mainly on. Youd have to be bloody mad or Scottish or both.
Marc (whom I miss very much) has given me the winners for the first 16 (yes 16) games but rang to say "dont lock em in yet doll" He has to look at who is playing in each team. Clever boy my marc. Fancy knowing all the players of all the teams . I bet he does. gotta laugh. 16 x 2 x 11 (is that how many in a team? thats about 352 players. I bet he knows them all too. and there stats. Gotta love his passion.
As a member of the board. My message for the day - keep smiling. Hug a tree.x

there are a few reasons why I like the world cup :
in 2002 brad backed Italy to win at 9 to 1-( two weeks before it started )- cha ching - $800 profit
in 2006 brad backed brazil to win at 9 to win - (two weeks before it started )- cha ching - $800 profit
in 2010 Brad has backed Argentina to win at 6 to 1 - (two weeks before the start )- WATCH THIS SPACE!!

we all know that good things come in three's

PS: was it you or some other brother that got up at an ungodly hour with our dad to watch the FA cup? FOR YEARS!!!!!!!!!
dont tell me you dont like soccer - I know for a fact that you have a celtic jumper in your wardrobe.
PSS: Im a member of the board as well - so while you are hugging that tree (as requested by Sandy) - share your beer while watching soccer with a blackfella!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PSS: gotta love the blog!

I think I am better off offering a suggestion for the digging trampoline eating dog than rising to the bait of your latest attempt to raise heckles Mr Chairman...from a girl who has half her heart in the UK and understands the offside rule way better than she comprehends the ballerina's in an AFL game - all I will say is .....yellow card :)

As someone who grew up with the All Blacks (who I don't think will make it past the quarters in the real world cup next year however that's a different story) Soccer/Football is an interesting game - the thing that stops me from being a true fan is the amount of acting that goes on! These guys are paid a ridiculous amount of money to kick a ball and yet don't seem to understand the rule of fairplay.....if your tackled, get up and chase the ball don't lie on the ground trying to milk a penalty! The say it's the world game....no wondert here are so many egotistical maniacs in the world (bet you they all watch football!). Oh and just so you kow how mad it is over the ditch - the have sold out of All White shirts, scarves etc.....shame we won't get through pool play.

Oh and on a completely different topic....check this out:

New Zealand has been ranked as the most peaceful nation in the world, with Australia coming in at 19th.

The ranking is contained in the 2010 Global Peace Index, which examines crime rates, defence spending and respect for human rights.

New Zealand has taken out the top ranking for the second year in a row, while Australia has maintained its position at 19th in the Institute of Economics and Peace compiled index.

The index's founder, Steve Killelea, says the rating took into account New Zealand's race relations, low defence spending and diplomacy.

"It [has] non-engagement in military conflicts and also it's got very good relationships with its neighbouring states," he said.

Ethiopia was ranked as the most improved country, while Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq and Sudan were among the least peaceful countries in the the world.

From the NZ Herald

Just proves it that tree hugging dope smoking MP's can make a difference. Oh and the reason we don't spend that much on Defence is cause we don't get invited to the wars cause we are Nuclear Free - managed to piss the yanks off with that one a couple of decades ago and they still don't like it (shame Ozzy pollies can't get their noes out of USA and UK arses long enough to stand up for their country!) Just my views as a oversees board member!

There's not many things a little sister can tell a big brother that he HAS to experience in life so I'm taking this opportunity while it lasts. You have to be in the UK for a world cup!! The atmosphere is like nothing I've ever experienced before and even if you have the best intentions just to join in for the social benefits, you do come away really liking the game of football. It does require far more skill than any other sport that requires a ball to play afterall, not to mention that the players are more enjoyable to look at due to the fact that their faces aren't ground into the dirt in tackles or trampled on while competing for the ball. Even Harry Kewell was quite decent several years back when I looked after his children. (Heh had to get that one in)

My argument Mr Chairman is that the game of football would be far more popular here in Australia if the games were televised at a more convenient time!

Im with your sister on this one and you know from past experience she usually has a point and is nearly always right Thats the youngest one
